English version
➡ Animal experimentation harms and stresses nonhuman animals in tests and experiments.
➡ Before any experiment, French [and European] law mandates the assessment of the project by an “ethics” committee.
➡ People who defend animal experimentation say that these committees guarantee that the experiments are ethical and respect “animalwelfare”.
➡ However, the comparison with committees who assess experiments on humans shows that animal experimentation committees do not really protect the animals.
➡ Committees for humans (Committees for the Protection of People) respect a basic principle: no harm is justified if there is no benefit for the person who is harmed.
➡ Furthermore, this person must freely give their consent after the advantages and inconvenients have been explicitly explained to them.
➡ If they cannot consent (for instance if they are in a coma), their family can consent for them, but only if the experiment can be greatly beneficial to the person.
➡ In animal experimentation, on the contrary, ethics committees accept as a rule the suffering and death of animals.
➡ Other rules apply, but the objectives of the research are always considered more important than the life of the animals.
